3.1 The main window
Speed Download's main window looks something like this:3.2 Menus
![]()
To download a file, enter its URL (all ftp URLs must start with ftp://, all http URLs with http://), login and password if necessary (Speed Download will login as anonymous if you don't give a login). Instead of typing or pasting a URL, you can drag it onto Speed Download's main window (This works with plain text or Apple's Internet shortcuts). You can also use the supplied contextual menu plugin (more about this later)
"Ports to Open" is the number of simultaneous connections to use. On a modem, using more than 4 is probably pointless. If your fortunate enough to have a high bandwidth connection then you should try using more connections. Speed Download supports up to 32 connections per file being downloaded.
Buffer size is the size (in kilobytes) that is used for each connection. The default, 32k is more than enough for modems. If you got something like cable or ADSL, you might want to try something around 64 or 128. If you have high buffer settings and/or lots of simultaneous connections, you may need to increase Speed Download's memory allocation. A buffer size that is too small won't stop Speed Download working, but it may slow downloads a bit, especially on high bandwidth connections
Once you have done this, click "Get it !". You will be asked where to save the file and Speed Download will try and get it (unless you have defined a default folder, which you are strongly advised to do see section 4.3 for more details)
Speed Download will first check that it is able to download the file, and will then proceed to open the connections. It will create a folder in which it will place segments of the file, which are named "Segment1", "Segment2" etc It will also create another file, this is the log file for this download that contains details about the download. If you click the "Resume Download" button, you will be asked for this log file. Note that to resume a download, you can also double-click on the log-file.
Most menu items should be self explanatory.
The "Web" menu deserves a few words though"Check Latest Version": Speed Download will check that you are using the latest version of Speed download (this doesn't launch your browser)"Speed Download Info Page": Sends you to my home page: http://simplemacs.multimania.com
"Register Online": Will send you to the online order page for Speed Download. Currently non-functional ( the final release of Speed Download will be shareware)
3.3 Integration with other
applications
Starting with version 0.9b, Speed Download includes a contextual menu plugin to allow you to access Speed Download's functionality from within other programs. To install the contextual menu plugin, drag the "Speed Download CMM" file onto a closed system folder, click ok when you are asked whether you want to put in the "Contextual Menu Items" and restart.Thereafter, when you are using a contextual menu compliant application ( for example Internet Explorer, iCab, Outlook Express or the Finder but not Netscape) if you [control] click on a URL you will be given the option of downloading that file with Speed Download. This also works if you [control] click on a MacOS Internet shortcut file or if you [control] click on the clipboard in a contextual menu compliant application.

Integration with a browser
Integration with the Finder's clipboard
Downloading from an Internet shortcut file on the Desktop Selecting the "Download with Speed Download" menu item will launch Speed Download if necessary and start the download. For the contextual menu plugin to work properly, you must delete older versions of Speed Download from all your hard drives, otherwise an older version which is not compatible with contextual menus might be launched by mistake. You may also have to rebuild the desktop database (hold [command] and [option] while your mac is starting up until you are asked whether you want to rebuild desktop files)
When you use the contextual menu plugin to start a download, whatever parameters (proxies, buffer sizes, etc ) that were last used are used for this download. If you have not defined a default download folder Speed Download will ask for a download location before starting the download.
